There's A Black Cat
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
There’s a Black Cat is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, growing body of work that parodies the kind of ‘art’ we see for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I see and feel around me, created entirely on my iPad — in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece is sparked by a passing sentiment, a song, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
This piece takes its cue from the lyric “There’s a black cat lying in the shadow of a gate post, he stands up” from the Hothouse Flowers song Don’t Go. Set against a vivid red background, the black cat looms out from shadow and text, half menacing, half familiar. The rough brushwork and scrawled words give the image a pulse — somewhere between music and memory, superstition and observation. *So you'd believe
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore humour, perception, and the immediacy of everyday thought — quick, expressive, and rooted in the moment.
