The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow comes, of course, from the iconic musical Annie — all bright optimism, little red curls, and relentless cheer. But I’ll be honest: my favourite version isn’t the Broadway one. It’s the wonderfully unhinged moment in Serial Mom, when Kathleen Turner, as the terrifyingly upbeat Beverly Sutphin, attacks a neighbour to the tune of it. That clash — sunny optimism over absolute chaos — is exactly what shaped this piece.
The painting sits right in that tension: hopeful words scrawled across a sky that hasn’t quite decided what mood it’s in. The clouds feel heavy, reluctant, yet the line hangs on with stubborn belief, insisting the sunshine will appear eventually — even if the world around it is behaving like a dark comedy. It’s an optimistic sigh: slightly weary, slightly amused, still trying.
The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, growing body of work that parodies the kind of “art” we see for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I see and feel around me. Created entirely on my iPad, these sketches appear wherever I happen to be — in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece begins with a passing emotion, a lyric, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore the immediacy of perception and the humour woven through everyday life — quick, expressive, slightly sarcastic, and always rooted in the moment.
