Sunshine on a Rainy Day
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
Sunshine on a Rainy Day borrows its title from the 1990's hit by Zoë — that bright burst of optimism that arrives exactly when you need it. This piece is really about that feeling: the small, unexpected lift in the middle of an otherwise grey moment. The sun here isn’t grand or dramatic; it’s slightly cheeky, gently amused, and quietly determined to shine anyway. A kind of warm, stubborn positivity. Sometimes that’s all you get, and sometimes it’s enough.
The loose, glowing brushstrokes and scrawled text keep it playful, almost childlike — a reminder that joy doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be simple, soft, and just a bit silly.
Sunshine on a Rainy Day is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, growing body of work that parodies the kind of “art” we see for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I see around me. Created entirely on my iPad, these sketches appear wherever I happen to be — in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece begins with a passing emotion, a lyric, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore the immediacy of perception and the humour woven through everyday life — quick, expressive, sometimes sarcastic, but always rooted in the moment.
