Dogs V Cats
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
Dogs V Cats looks like it’s about the classic rivalry — the loyal dog versus the aloof cat — but really, it has nothing to do with them. The animals are fine. It’s the owners who turn it into a personality war. People don’t choose pets so much as pick furry mirrors of themselves. Dog people, cat people… it’s less biology and more psychology. The creatures become extensions of their humans: their habits, their neuroses, their moods. In the end, it’s not a debate about animals at all — it’s a portrait of us.
The bright, scratchy text and the loose, expressive strokes play into the absurdity of it: a playful reminder that we project far more onto these poor animals than they ever asked for.
Dogs V Cats is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, growing body of work that parodies the kind of “art” we see for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I see and feel around me. Created entirely on my iPad, these sketches appear wherever I happen to be — in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece begins with a passing emotion, a lyric, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore the immediacy of perception and the humour woven through everyday life — quick, expressive, slightly sarcastic, and always rooted in the moment.
