"The brown crab is the largest crab species found around the coast of the UK and Ireland.  They have large and powerful black tipped claws.  In order to grow they have to shed their shell.  Their lifespan is thought to be 30-40 years or more.  They are mainly nocturnal and hide under rocks, emerging to feed on mussels, whelks and even smaller crabs."
