A. N. Other Contemporary Landscape speaks for itself. Now, before you shout at me for being a complete hypocrite, I know that I create — or make — a lot of landscapes. Probably seventy percent of what I produce falls into that category: scenes from around Ireland and beyond, fired onto porcelain, printed on paper, pressed onto aluminium. They’re familiar, decorative, functional, commercial. People instantly know what they’re looking at, and I’m very aware of that. I’m not dismissing them, but I’m also not pretending they sit in some elevated realm of “Art,” whatever that word is meant to cover these days.

This piece probably best encapsulates this entire body of work — a little sarcastic, a little judgy, a little observational (including observing myself and what I’m making). The dramatic sky, the moody brushwork, the obligatory “red boat,” the expressive sweep of colour — all the trademarks of those swishy, atmospheric contemporary landscapes you see absolutely everywhere. They’re on every wall, every café, every market stall. And here, unapologetically, is another one. A landscape fully conscious of its place in the world, gently poking fun at the genre while still performing exactly as expected.

A. N. Other Contemporary Landscape is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, growing body of work that parodies the kind of “art” seen for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I encounter and feel around me, created entirely on my iPad — whether in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — catching thoughts before they slip away. Each piece begins with a passing emotion, a lyric, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.

Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore the immediacy of perception and the humour woven through everyday life — quick, expressive, quietly irreverent, and always rooted in the moment.
